PIN–UP INTERVIEWS, VOL. 1. Photography by Adrian Gaut for PIN–UP

When we first published PIN–UP Interviews (powerHouse Books, 2013), we thought of it as a snapshot of our first years as a magazine and a way to collect some of the conversations that had shaped our understanding of architecture and design, of “architectural entertainment.” Reissuing the book more than a decade later feels like opening a time capsule filled with familiar voices, unexpected insights, and a certain spirit of curiosity that continues to feel very PIN–UP.

The book gathers over 50 interviews from PIN–UP’s early issues, featuring architects, designers, and artists including Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, David Adjaye, Ettore Sottsass, and Hedi Slimane, to name but a few. Each conversation stands on its own, yet together they mark a period when architecture opened up to new ways of thinking about authorship, identity, and practice.

Rereading these interviews today, we’re struck by their immediacy and openness — a snapshot of a pre-social media design world. The questions are often simple; the answers rarely are. What connects them all is a willingness to look at architecture not as a fixed language, but as a living exchange between people, ideas, and objects. The 448-page paperback, designed by PIN–UP’s former art director Dylan Fracareta, mirrors that spirit: straightforward, tactile, and unadorned. This reissue is an act of reflection, not nostalgia. It reminds us how the conversations that once defined the magazine continue to evolve, and how dialogue itself remains at the heart of PIN–UP.
