FRIDA ESCOBEDO’S TERTULIA

by Layla Fassa, Axelle Dechelette

For centuries, tertulias have been salon-style gatherings across Spain and the Spanish-speaking world, bringing together intellectuals, artists, and provocateurs for spirited exchange. Often helmed by formidable women, these salons shaped cultural discourse for generations. For PIN–UP 39, guest editor Frida Escobedo has assembled her own 21st-century tertulia: ten cultural practitioners based in Mexico City with whom she shares a creative kinship. Spanning art, design, food, and architecture, this constellation of talent represents some of the Mexican capital’s most compelling voices, gathered around one of its most iconic addresses: the “twin towers” on Paseo de la Reforma, designed in the 1950s by Mario Pani, Mexico’s true über-father of Modernism (sorry, Barragán). Several of the city’s most interesting creative minds call the towers home. Of course, no gathering—however illustrious—is ever complete. But as any good hostess knows, there’s always the next tertulia.
