Poliform Takes Center Stage at the Piazza della Scala

Piazza della Scala is one of those Milanese addresses that’s more like a state of mind, a stage set for civic ambition. Here, corporate palazzi, cultural institutions, and, of course, the legendary Teatro alla Scala collectively narrate the city’s long performance as Italy’s capital of industry, reinvention, and “made in Italy” aesthetic refinement. The five-story palazzo at number 5, on the southwestern corner of the square, was constructed in the late 19th century — an important moment for Lombardy’s burgeoning capital. It first opened as a private residence in 1876 and was later converted into a hotel in 1905 to host the artists performing at Teatro alla Scala. The building’s architecture reflects the confidence of a city discovering how to present itself — sober, efficient, and self-aware enough to enjoy its own performance. One hundred and fifty years later, the arrival of Poliform at such a storied location feels like a natural alignment: the Milan flagship store the design brand always deserved. Founded in 1970 as a family company in nearby Brianza, Poliform has cultivated a design language grounded in refined proportions, material intelligence, and the belief that living spaces should be both rational and deeply sensorial. To occupy such an important address is therefore to inscribe the brand’s ethos within Milan’s own narrative of radical continuity: a city where craftsmanship and entrepreneurship have always moved in lockstep toward the future. PIN–UP helped stage Poliform’s symbolic move against the piazza’s monumental backdrop, where three handsome “movers” carry key pieces from Poliform’s collection — including designs by Jean-Marie Massaud, Stefano Belingardi Clusoni, and Emmanuel Gallina. Because more than any other city, Milan appreciates a good entrance.
