EMANUELE COCCIA DECONSTRUCTS HOME AT THE SWISS INSTITUTE
by PIN–UP
To celebrate the launch of PIN–UP’s 36th issue, UNDER CONSTRUCTION, we invited Italian philosopher Emanuele Coccia to read from his book 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦: 𝘋𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘏𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴—which has recently been translated to English—at the Swiss Institute on May 12, 2024. Following the reading, Coccia talked with Jing Liu, co-founder of the architecture firm SO–IL, about the potential contained within domestic spaces for reshaping our understandings of individualism, community, and morality. After the reading and discussion, guests sipped on white Negronis in glassware graciously provided by Mamo while flipping through brand new copies of PIN–UP 36.

𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦, first published in Italian in 2021, details Coccia’s belief that philosophical tradition has neglected the home in favor of its urban surroundings, and as a result, domestic space is built on arcane systems of oppression and inequality that do not match our modern needs. For Coccia, the home can become a powerful incubator for social and economic change.

Coccia is a lecturer at EHESS, the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris, and his writing includes 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴: 𝘈 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘪𝘹𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘴, 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴: 𝘈𝘥𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘜𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘯 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘓𝘢𝘸 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦, and 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦: 𝘈 𝘔𝘪𝘤𝘳𝘰-𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦. He is currently working alongside Alessandro Michele, Creative Director of Valentino, on a publication that explores the relationships between fashion and philosophy. Coccia is the recipient of the Mondrian Prize 2024, for which he invited architects, artists, curators, and designers to a project on “metropolitan nature.”
