CAKE FIGHT: PARTY PAGES FROM MIAMI

As far as Miami goes, the first Monday in December is usually in a proverbial lull before the art and design storm that is Art Basel Miami Beach 2014 and Design Miami (as well as a flurry of collateral events and fairs) hit the coastal resort town with full force.

Not so this year thanks to PIN–UP teaming up with the New York-based design gallery Chamber, disrupting the calm with a sweet dessert and champagne reception with specially commissioned cakes by the likes of Studio Job, Viktor & Rolf, Formafantasma, Alessandro Mendini, , and Floris Wubben. The designers, whose work is also currently on view at Chamber Gallery, submitted their dream cake drawings to the talented pâtissiers Laila Gohar, Robert Onuska, and Antonella Tignanelli, who then transformed them into real-life candied concoctions.

Sweet-toothed partygoers went wild with their empty plates and cell phone cameras when at 10:30 PM Job Smeets, one half of Studio Job, cut the design duo’s three-tiered rosy pink “Sex Cake” into generous slices, revealing rich red velvet cake interior. The night continued on with tunes spun by recording artist Lafawndah setting the madness and magic of Art Basel in motion.
